Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity recently adopted the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. As part of this, signatory nations have committed to protect at least 30% of land and ocean by 2030. Yet, biodiversity is unevenly distributed across the globe. When implementing the 30% conservation target, effective conservation requires consideration of biodiversity patterns in addition to national sovereignty and national circumstances. Our study found that to improve conservation outcomes, the expansion of the global protected area network must focus on areas that contribute most to global conservation. However, some biodiversity-rich developing countries, particularly tropical and island nations, face extreme conservation challenges. Strong funding mechanisms will be needed to support countries’ cooperative and coordinated action so that the costs of protecting globally important biodiversity and carbon sites can be fairly shared across the global community.
