About the Lecture Series on Genetic Analysis by Michael Koelle and Tian Xu in the Spring of 2010
Professors Michael Koelle and Tian Xu have been teaching a very popular course “Basic Concepts of Genetic Analysis” at Yale University since 1998. They’ve made an emphasis on training students to think like a geneticist, that is, to dissect and solve problems using genetic principles. This full-credit course is not about memorizing “knowledge” and there is no exam. To do well, students have to make a serious investment of time to understand genetics from real problems, group discussions, and independent thinking under the guidance of instructors and TAs. Because it is intellectually stimulating, albeit demanding, this course enjoys huge popularity among Yale students.
It is with great pleasure that we make the following announcement. Professors Michael Koelle and Tian Xu will be teaching a condensed version of this course in Beijing in the spring of 2010, from March 22 to April 2. This 2-week lecture series consist of nine lectures, three paper discussions, two take-home questions and no exams. Students will be evaluated based on performance in paper discussions and with take-home questions. These questions are real–they were once encountered by breathing researchers in the lab during the course of a research project.
